The shield machine is mainly composed of the cutter ring, cutter body (sleeve), cutter shaft, bearing, floating seal, end cover, and other components.

1) Cutter Ring

During shield tunneling in medium-hard rock layers, rock breaking and excavation are achieved by squeezing the rock with the roller cutter ring. The cutter ring is a key component of the roller cutter and should possess high mechanical strength, good wear resistance, and impact toughness.

Cutter rings are generally divided into two types: steel rings and鑲齒 (insert-tooth) rings. Steel rings are mostly made of alloy tool steel or alloy structural steel.鑲齒 (insert-tooth) cutter rings, which need to hold cemented carbide, require materials with a good combination of strength and toughness, so high-strength alloy structural steel is often selected.

2) Bearing

Roller cutter bearings are primarily tapered roller bearings. Depending on the operating conditions, the bearing clearance, preload, and installation torque vary.

3) Floating Seal

The purpose of the seal is to ensure that the lubricant inside the roller cutter does not leak and to prevent foreign matter from entering. The sealing effect is crucial for ensuring the normal operation of the roller cutter and extending its service life. The floating seal consists of two meshing metal sealing rings and two elastic composite rubber sealing rings, providing an excellent sealing effect.

The metal sealing ring is the main component of the sealing device, and its structure and quality play a decisive role in the sealing performance. The metal sealing ring is made of high-hardness, wear-resistant high-chromium molybdenum cast iron material. The "O-ring" is made of nitrile rubber.

4) Cutter Body and Main Shaft

The roller cutter body and main shaft provide support and require a certain level of strength and toughness. The material is typically medium-carbon alloy structural steel.
