1. Properties: Colorless or white cubic crystals, odorless, with a strong bitter-salty taste. Easily releases iodine in air, turning yellow. Soluble in ethanol, acetone, methanol, glycerol, and liquid chlorine; slightly soluble in ether; highly soluble in water with endothermic dissolution. Aqueous solution is neutral or slightly acidic.
2. Uses: Used as a raw material for preparing iodides and dyes. In medicine, it serves as a goiter preventive, vitreous opacity absorbent, expectorant, and diuretic. In the photographic materials industry, it is used as a photosensitive emulsifier and color photo mordant. Also used as a food additive, flux, and in lithographic printing, as well as an analytical reagent, for chromatography, and spot analysis.
