Properties

Reacts violently with water and air: It reacts instantly with water to generate butane and lithium hydroxide, releasing a large amount of heat. Meanwhile, it is extremely sensitive to air.

Flammable: In humid air, due to the violent exothermic reaction, flammable butane is released.

Stability: It needs to be stored and used at low temperatures.

Applications

1. Strong base/lithiation reagent: Used for the synthesis of pharmaceutical intermediates, agrochemicals, and liquid crystal materials.

2. Lithium-halogen exchange reaction: Used to prepare organolithium compounds such as aryllithium and vinyllithium.

3. Anionic polymerization initiator: Used to produce synthetic rubbers, such as low-cis polybutadiene rubber, isoprene rubber, and SBS thermoplastic elastomer.
