| Physicochemical Properties | tert-Butyl alcohol (TBA), also known as trimethylcarbinol, 2-methyl-2-propanol, etc., forms the four isomers of butanol together with n-butanol, isobutanol, and sec-butanol. The pure product is a colorless crystal, and becomes a colorless volatile liquid in the presence of a small amount of water. It has a camphor-like odor, is hygroscopic, flammable, and has higher toxicity compared to other alcohols. It is soluble in most organic solvents, such as alcohols, esters, ketones, aromatic and aliphatic hydrocarbons, and can form an azeotropic mixture with water. These properties make tert-butyl alcohol a useful solvent and additive, and it is one of the petrochemical products with wide applications. |
