【Product Uses】

In addition to its antioxidant effect, BHA also has strong antibacterial properties. As a food antioxidant, it can inhibit the oxidation of oily foods and delay the onset of spoilage. When used as an antioxidant, it can exert antioxidant effects on acids, hydroquinone, methionine, lecithin, and thiodipropionic acid. It can also be used as an antioxidant in animal feed.

As a fat-soluble antioxidant, BHA is suitable for oily and lipid-rich foods. Due to its good thermal stability, it can be used under frying or baking conditions.

BHA has a strong antioxidant effect on animal fats but a weaker effect on unsaturated plant fats.

BHA can stabilize the color of raw beef and inhibit the oxidation of ester compounds.

When combined with sodium tripolyphosphate and ascorbic acid, BHA can delay the spoilage of frozen pork chops.

BHA can slightly extend the shelf life of spray-dried whole milk powder and improve the preservation period of cheese.

BHA can stabilize the color of chili and chili powder and prevent the oxidation of foods such as walnuts and peanuts.

Adding BHA to baking oils and salt can preserve the aroma of baked goods and salted peanuts, extending the shelf life of baked products.

When mixed with other fat-soluble antioxidants, BHA performs better. For example, combining butyl hydroxyanisole and dibutyl hydroxytoluene can protect carp, chicken, pork chops, and frozen smoked pork slices.

A mixture of BHA or dibutyl hydroxytoluene, propyl gallate, and citric acid added to butter used in candy making can inhibit candy oxidation.

【BHA Usage in Food】

BHA content, calculated based on fat, must not exceed 0.2 g/kg. At a usage level of ≤0.02%, the antioxidant effect is 10% higher than at 0.01%. However, when the usage exceeds 0.02%, the antioxidant effect decreases.

According to China's "Hygienic Standard for the Use of Food Additives" (GB2760―2024), butyl hydroxyanisole can be used in edible oils, fried foods, dried fish products, biscuits, instant rice, canned nuts, cured meat products, and breakfast cereals, with a usage limit of 0.2 g/kg.

When butyl hydroxyanisole is used in combination with dibutyl hydroxytoluene and propyl gallate, the total amount of butyl hydroxyanisole and dibutyl hydroxytoluene must not exceed 0.1 g/kg, and propyl gallate must not exceed 0.05 g/kg (usage calculated based on fat). It can also be used in chewing gum ingredients.

Usage in animal fats: 0.001%~0.01%;

Vegetable oils: 0.002%~0.02%;

Baked goods: 0.01%~0.04%;

Cereal foods: 0.005%~0.02%;

Soy milk powder: 0.001%;

Refined oils: 0.01%~0.1;

Candies and chewing gum base: up to 0.1%.

The "Standard for the Use Scope and Dosage of Food Additives" (GB2760-2024) stipulates: It can be used in oils, cream, dried fish, shellfish products, and their dried products, with a usage limit below 0.2 g/kg; for frozen fish, shellfish, and frozen whale meat soaking solutions, below 1 g/kg; for chewing gum and bubble gum, below 0.75 g/kg.

FAO/WHO (2024) stipulates: For general edible oils, the usage limit is ≤0.2 g/kg. When used in combination with dibutyl hydroxytoluene, gallate esters, or tert-butylhydroquinone, gallic acid must not exceed 100 mg/kg, and the total amount must be 0.2 g/kg; for margarine, when used alone or in combination with dibutyl hydroxytoluene and gallate esters, gallate esters must not exceed 100 mg/kg. It must not be used for direct disinfection or in modified milk and its products. Usage in oils and cream should be below 0.02%; soaking solutions for frozen fish and shellfish should be below 0.1%.
