Cracks in pavement slabs occur because cement concrete roads possess a certain brittleness. Under the influence of temperature and humidity changes, the concrete is prone to severe hardening and subsequent deformation. The cementation of various materials in the cement concrete pavement structure due to interactions may also cause minor cracks to some extent. Under continuous external environmental influences, these can lead to the emergence of macroscopic cracks. Initial slab cracks are often caused by poor material quality, unreasonable construction techniques, and improper material ratios. Cracks that appear during operation are mainly due to unreasonable design, aircraft takeoffs and landings, and uneven settlement of the subgrade.

When temperatures drop too rapidly or the environmental temperature is too low, internal stress develops within the structure. Once this exceeds the tensile strength of the concrete structure, the surface layer cracks. When temperatures rise, cement concrete expands rapidly, and thermal stress exceeds the ultimate stress, ultimately causing pavement fracture. Under repeated low or high-temperature conditions, if appropriate repair measures are not taken, severe breakage issues will occur. Additionally, under sustained heavy loads, when the internal stress in the cement concrete pavement structure exceeds the ultimate stress, the pavement will develop severe fatigue cracks.
