1. Used as a cosolvent for nitrocellulose, and as a solvent for ethyl cellulose, polyvinyl butyral, various oils, rubber, and natural resins. It serves as a raw material in organic synthesis for producing petroleum additives, antioxidants, 2,6-di-tert-butyl-p-cresol, isobutyl acetate (paint solvent), plasticizers, synthetic rubber, artificial musk, fruit essential oils, esters, and synthetic pharmaceuticals. It is also employed in purifying chemical reagents such as salts of strontium, barium, and lithium, and as a high-grade solvent. Its application scope is limited; it must never be used in agricultural plastics because isobutanol can cause crop death.

2. A reagent for determining calcium, strontium, barium, sodium, potassium, lithium, silver, chlorine, and phosphites. It is used as a reference substance in chromatographic analysis and is a common solvent and extractant. It is applied in extracting lithium chloride from mixtures with sodium chloride or potassium chloride.

3. A basic organic chemical raw material, used as a diluent in adhesives and as a solvent for ethyl cellulose, polyvinyl butyral, rubber, natural resins, and various oils. It is also utilized in purifying chemical reagents such as salts of strontium, barium, and lithium. Currently, domestic isobutanol is primarily used to produce diisobutyl phthalate plasticizers and isobutyl acetate solvents, with a smaller portion used in manufacturing isobutyl butyrate, isobutyl lactate, and others.
