White powdery crystalline polymer with a relative density of 1.75–1.78. It can be processed using general thermoplastic methods. It is the toughest among fluoroplastics, with a tensile strength greater than 39 MPa, and good impact strength and wear resistance. It has excellent UV resistance and weather aging resistance; its film remains non-brittle and uncracked even after 10–20 years of outdoor exposure. It also exhibits outstanding radiation resistance; its film shows no change in mechanical properties after exposure to γ-ray irradiation of 3×10? roentgen. PVDF has unique dielectric properties, with a high dielectric constant of 6–8 MHz and a large dielectric loss tangent, approximately 0.02–0.2. Its volume resistivity is slightly lower, at 2×101? Ω·cm. Its long-term service temperature range is –40°C to 150°C, within which the polymer maintains excellent mechanical properties. Its glass transition temperature is –39°C, brittle temperature below –62°C, crystalline melting point around 170°C, and thermal decomposition temperature above 316°C. PVDF has good corrosion resistance; it is not corroded by acids, alkalis, or strong oxidizing agents at room temperature. It is unaffected by aliphatic hydrocarbons, aromatic hydrocarbons, alcohols, aldehydes, and other organic solvents. Only a few chemicals, such as fuming sulfuric acid, strong basic primary amines, ketones, and ethers, can attack it. Dimethylformamide and dimethyl sulfoxide can dissolve it.

Water Solubility

Soluble in some polar solvents, such as organic esters and amines: soluble | Soluble in organic esters, dimethylacetamide, and amines. Insoluble in water.

Applications

Used for manufacturing chemical machinery parts, sealing materials, electrical insulation, and anti-corrosion coatings; preparation of ion-exchange membranes, capacitor films, and other materials
