A colorless, flammable liquid with a distinctive odor. Freezing point -75°C, relative density 0.8344 (20/20°C), refractive index 1.4316, flash point 81.1°C, viscosity (20°C) 9.8 mPa·s, vapor pressure (20°C) 48 Pa. Miscible with alcohols and ethers, soluble in about 720 times its volume of water, with a solubility in water of only 0.1% at 20°C. Forms an azeotrope with water containing 20% water, azeotropic point 99.1%.
Product Applications
1. Primarily used in the production of plasticizers, main products include: dioctyl phthalate (DOP), dioctyl adipate (DOA), trioctyl trimellitate (TOTM), as well as ester plasticizers and cold-resistant auxiliary plasticizers for dicarboxylic acids such as phthalic acid, azelaic acid, and sebacic acid.
2. Can be used as a defoamer for white latex, but has poor defoaming and foam suppression capabilities.
3. When used in the formulation of mixed solvents for nitrocellulose lacquers, it prevents the whitening of the paint film.
4. It is an excellent solvent, applicable in paper sizing, latex, and photography.
5. Also used in the production of surfactants, dispersants, lubricants, emulsifiers, antioxidants, mineral processing agents, mercerizing agents, and petroleum additives.
6. As an approved food flavoring, it is commonly used in baked goods, frozen dairy products, and puddings.
