It is a colorless, hygroscopic liquid with a distinctive odor and is a multifunctional non-hazardous solvent. It is primarily used as a solvent in inks, paints, printing inks, textile dyes, and textile oils, and can also serve as a cleaning agent in the production of liquid crystal displays. It is flammable and may form explosive vapor/air mixtures above 42°C.

It is suitable for use as a solvent in high-end coatings, inks, and various polymers, including urethane, vinyl, polyester, cellulose acetate, alkyd resins, acrylic resins, epoxy resins, and cellulose. Among these, propylene glycol monomethyl ether propionate is the best solvent for coatings and inks, suitable for unsaturated polyester, polyurethane resins, acrylic resins, epoxy resins, etc.
