     Function and Uses
Ethanol is an important organic solvent widely used in pharmaceuticals, coatings, hygiene products, cosmetics, fats and oils, among other areas, accounting for about 50% of the total ethanol consumption. Ethanol is a key basic chemical raw material used in the production of acetaldehyde, ethylene, ethylamine, ethyl acetate, acetic acid, chloroethane, etc., and it derives many intermediates for products such as pharmaceuticals, dyes, coatings, fragrances, synthetic rubber, detergents, pesticides, etc., with over 300 types of products. The use of ethanol as an intermediate in chemical products is gradually declining, as many products like acetaldehyde and acetic acid no longer use ethanol as a raw material but are replaced by other sources. A 75% ethanol aqueous solution has strong sterilizing ability and is a commonly used disinfectant. Specially refined ethanol can also be used in the production of beverages. Similar to methanol, ethanol can be used as an energy source. Some countries have begun to use ethanol alone as automotive fuel or blend it with gasoline (10% or more) to save gasoline.
