Methyl tert-butyl ether (abbreviated as MTBE) is an organic compound that appears as a colorless liquid with a relative density of 0.7405 and a boiling point of 55.2°C. It is soluble in ethanol and slightly soluble in water. It is produced by the reaction of isobutylene and methanol catalyzed by ion exchange resin and is a high-octane gasoline additive. It is commonly used as a gasoline additive to improve the cold-start characteristics, acceleration performance, and octane distribution of gasoline.
1. Primarily used as a gasoline additive to increase octane rating, and can also be cracked to produce isobutylene.
2. This product is mainly used as a gasoline additive, offering excellent anti-knock properties. It has good miscibility with gasoline, low water absorption, and causes no environmental pollution. MTBE improves the cold-start characteristics and acceleration performance of gasoline without adversely affecting vapor lock. Although methyl tert-butyl ether has a low calorific value, road tests have shown that using gasoline containing 10% MTBE can reduce fuel consumption by 7% and significantly lower the emissions of lead, CO, and especially carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in exhaust gases. As an organic synthesis raw material, it can be used to produce high-purity isobutylene. It is also used in the production of 2-methyl methacrylic acid and isoprene, among others. Additionally, it can be used as an analytical solvent and extraction agent.
3. Used as a gasoline additive to replace leaded gasoline, serving as a gasoline additive to increase octane rating. It is slightly soluble in water and miscible with many organic solvents and gasoline. It forms azeotropes with some polar solvents such as water, methanol, and ethanol. It has mild effects.
