KDF is a high-purity copper-zinc alloy that removes oxidants from water, such as residual chlorine. This process occurs through a redox reaction, or electrochemical reaction, between copper and zinc in water. Because KDF consists of two different metals, copper and zinc, when in contact with water, the copper (with a higher electrochemical potential) acts as the cathode, while the zinc (with a lower potential) acts as the anode. Reduction occurs at the cathode, and oxidation occurs at the anode. In the chlorine removal reaction, the zinc anode loses electrons, releasing a certain number of zinc ions into the solution, while reduction of free chlorine occurs at the copper cathode without dissolving the copper metal. Water and residual chlorine become the final electron acceptors, transforming into hydrogen ions, hydroxide ions, and chloride ions. The overall reaction is as follows: Zn + HOCl + H?O + 2e? → Zn2? + Cl? + H? + 2OH?. The chloride ions in water are harmless to the human body and may even offer some benefits.
Functions:
(1) Remove Residual Chlorine: In certain scenarios, such as with free chlorine, this chemical reaction can convert it into beneficial substances, removing chlorine, trihalomethane byproducts, hydrogen sulfide, and other harmful gases, which are then filtered out in the next layer.
(2) Remove Heavy Metals: KDF55 media can remove up to 98% of water-soluble inorganic heavy metals. Harmful heavy metals like iron, lead, copper, and mercury react and precipitate on the surface of the media, effectively removing them from water.
(3) Inhibit Bacteria: KDF media also controls microorganisms and genuinely has antibacterial effects. The electrolyte environment created by the redox reaction is lethal to certain microbes. The reaction also produces hydroxyl radicals and hydrogen peroxide (H?O?), which reduce the activity of other microorganisms.
(4) Prevent Scaling: By creating a unique electrolyte environment that inhibits bacterial growth, it reduces scale formation in places like showerheads and bathtubs. It can even alter calcium molecules in water to prevent scaling.
