Uses: Used in the production of developing agents for photographic films, intensifiers for negatives, and bleaching agents for color photographs. In medicine, it serves as a nerve sedative, and is also used in the manufacture of special soaps, engraving, lithography, and in the synthesis of crystalline industrial products.
Properties: White crystals, odorless, with a salty and slightly bitter taste. Specific gravity 2.75 (25oC), melting point 734oC, boiling point 1435oC. Soluble in water and glycerol, slightly soluble in alcohol and ether, with slight deliquescence. Aqueous solution is neutral.
