Performance and Functions of Petroleum Resin in Different Industries

Petroleum resin is named for its origin as a petroleum derivative. It features low acid value, good miscibility, resistance to water, ethanol, and chemicals, chemical stability to acids and alkalis, as well as the characteristics of adjusting viscosity and good thermal stability. Petroleum resin is generally not used alone but serves as a promoter, regulator, modifier, or is used together with other resins. Hot Melt Adhesive

A. Paints

Paints primarily use high softening point C9 petroleum resin, C5/C9 copolymer resin, DF-A54 resin, and DF-Z91 resin. Adding petroleum resin to paints can enhance the gloss of the paint, improve the adhesion, hardness, acid resistance, and alkali resistance of the paint film.

B. Rubber

Rubber mainly uses low softening point C5 petroleum resin, C5/C9 copolymer resin, DF-A54 resin, and DF-Z91 resin. These resins have excellent compatibility with natural rubber particles and do not significantly affect the rubber vulcanization process. Adding petroleum resin to rubber can provide tackifying, reinforcing, and softening effects. In particular, the addition of C5/C9 copolymer resin not only increases the adhesion between rubber particles but also enhances the adhesion between rubber particles and cord, making it suitable for high-demand rubber products such as radial tires.

C. Adhesive Industry

Petroleum resin has excellent adhesion properties. Adding petroleum resin or DF-A54 resin to adhesives and pressure-sensitive tapes can improve the adhesion, acid resistance, alkali resistance, and water resistance of the adhesive, while effectively reducing production costs.

D. Ink Industry

Ink uses petroleum resin, mainly high softening point C9 petroleum resin, DF-A54 resin, and DF-Z91 resin. Adding petroleum resin to ink can achieve color development, fast drying, brightening effects, and improve printing performance.

E. Coating Industry

For road marking and road line coatings, petroleum resin and DF-R54 resin exhibit good adhesion to concrete or asphalt pavement, along with excellent wear resistance and water resistance. They have good affinity with inorganic materials, are easy to apply, offer good weather resistance, fast drying, high strength, and can improve the physical and chemical properties of the coating layer, enhancing UV resistance and weather resistance. Currently, petroleum resin road marking paint is gradually becoming mainstream, with demand increasing year by year.

F. Others

The resin has a certain degree of unsaturation and can be used in paper sizing agents, plastic modifiers, etc.

Petroleum resin is non-hazardous. During transportation, it should be protected from sunlight and rain; it must not be transported with spontaneously combustible materials, strong oxidizers, or strong acids.

Petroleum resin should be stored in a ventilated, cool, and dry environment. The storage period is generally one year, and it can still be used after one year if it passes inspection.
