Since the invention of toothpaste, cleaning teeth has always been its primary and most fundamental function. This cleaning action is largely achieved through abrasives in the toothpaste formulation. Common abrasives used in toothpaste today include silica, calcium carbonate, and others. The mass fraction of abrasives in toothpaste formulations typically ranges from 15% to 50%. During brushing, these abrasives are the main factor in mechanically removing dental plaque and stains. However, using toothpaste with excessively high abrasiveness can lead to wear on the hard tissues of the teeth while cleaning.

The ISO 11609 method uses bovine tooth samples as in vitro experimental materials. These samples are subjected to reciprocal brushing on an abrasion tester/brushing machine to evaluate the degree of tooth wear caused by toothpaste.

Multiple instruments have been developed to assess the abrasiveness of toothpaste, toothbrushes, tooth powder, and teeth whitening products on teeth. Based on this, various dental blocks have been created for characterizing tooth wear.
