Gas chromatography malfunctions occasionally, such as baseline issues, peak problems, and airflow issues. In fact, these problems are largely due to the column. Today, Xiao Xi will outline common column malfunctions and their solutions, hoping to provide some advice and suggestions.

Column Aging
1. How should a new column be aged? Opinions vary—some say it’s unnecessary, others insist on overnight aging, and some believe the heating rate must be slow. So, how should it be done?
Answer: After installing the column, first flush it with a carrier gas flow rate at least three times the normal working flow rate, then adjust the flow rate to normal. Rapidly heat from 100 degrees to the aging temperature to age the column.

Aging temperature should be 20 degrees higher than the final temperature of sample analysis but not exceed the column’s isothermal temperature上限. Maintain this temperature for 2 hours to quickly age a new capillary column. There is no limit to the heating rate during aging; the maximum heating rate can be used.

If the final temperature of sample analysis exceeds the column’s isothermal temperature上限, the column must be re-aged at a higher temperature than the initial aging temperature, but not exceeding the column’s programmed temperature上限. If the detector signal does not decrease after 10 minutes of isothermal conditions, immediately lower the column temperature and check for gas leaks.

The time required for column aging depends on the needs of the application analysis and the operator’s acceptable level of bleed. The lower the required detection limit, the longer the aging time needed (directly related to the polarity and film thickness of the column’s stationary phase). Polar and thick-film columns bleed more and require more thorough aging. For most applications, 30 to 60 minutes of aging is sufficient.
