(I)Characteristics of Impressed Current Cathodic Protection System
The impressed current cathodic protection system involves connecting a DC power source to the protected metal structure, with the positive terminal connected to an auxiliary anode that is external to the metal structure and insulated from it. When the circuit is closed, current flows from the auxiliary anode through the seawater to the metal structure, forming a closed loop, and the metal structure is cathodically polarized and protected. Its features include:
1.It can automatically adjust the current according to changes in external conditions (such as sea area, flow velocity, temperature, etc.), keeping the potential of the protected part within the optimal protection range.
2.Long service life and protection cycle; using insoluble, high-efficiency auxiliary anodes, the service life can reach 10-20 years.
3.Auxiliary anodes have high current discharge capacity and a large radius of action, capable of protecting complex structures, large-area equipment, and port facilities.
(2)Components of the Impressed Current Cathodic Protection System
The impressed current cathodic protection system consists of auxiliary anodes, reference electrodes, anode layers, DC power sources, and corresponding cables.
1)Auxiliary Anode Materials
In the impressed current protection system, the external electrode connected to the positive terminal of the DC power source is called the auxiliary anode. Its function is to allow current to flow from the electrode through the medium to the surface of the protected object.
The electrochemical performance, mechanical properties, processability, as well as the shape, size, distribution, and installation of the anode structure, all affect its lifespan and protection effectiveness.
Ideal anode materials should possess the following properties:
1.Good electrical conductivity, low anode polarization, and low surface resistance.
2.High current discharge capacity.
3.Corrosion resistance, low consumption rate, and long service life.
4.The material should have certain mechanical strength, wear resistance, and resistance to impact and vibration.
5.Good machinability, easy to process into various shapes.
6.Easily obtainable materials at relatively low cost.
