This product is an alkaloid extracted from the stems of Fibraurea recisa Pierre. of the Menispermaceae family. It contains not less than 90% calculated on the dried basis.

【Tests】Loss on drying    When dried to constant weight at 80°C, it loses not more than 15.0% of its weight.

Residue on ignition    Not more than 0.5%.

【Assay】 Determine by high-performance liquid chromatography (Appendix VID)

  Chromatographic system and system suitability Use a column packed with alkyl-bonded silica gel; use a mixture of acetonitrile and 0.4% phosphoric acid solution (32:68) as the mobile phase; the column temperature is 40°C; the detection wavelength is 345nm. The number of theoretical plates of the column is not less than 5000, calculated with reference to the peak of palmatine.

  Reference solution  Weigh accurately a quantity of palmatine CRS, and add methanol to produce a solution containing 40μg of palmatine per 1ml.

  Test solution  Triturate the product, weigh accurately 100mg, place in a 100ml volumetric flask, add 20ml of methanol, sonicate (power 300W, frequency 50KHz) for 5 minutes, allow to cool, dilute with water to volume, and filter. Measure accurately 2ml of the successive filtrate, place in a 50ml volumetric flask, dilute with water to volume.

      Procedure  Inject separately 5μl of the reference solution and the test solution into the liquid chromatograph, and determine.
