【Source】: The fruit of the plant Ligustrum lucidum from the Oleaceae family. Mature fruits are harvested from November to December, then sun-dried; or scalded in hot water before sun-drying.

Chinese Name: Wintergreen oil

Aliases: Methyl salicylate, Salicylic acid methyl ester, Gaultheria oil

English Name: Wintergreen oil; Gaultheria oil

【Main Components】

Contains methyl salicylate (up to 98%). Properties: This product is a colorless to pale yellow or slightly red oily liquid. It has the characteristic odor of wintergreen.

Turns darker in color upon contact with iron. Boiling point (with decomposition) 219~224°C. Soluble in ethanol and glacial acetic acid, very slightly soluble in water.

【Preparation Method】

Method 1: Obtained by steam distillation of the leaves of Gaultheria procumbens (commonly known as wintergreen) from the Ericaceae family after water soaking.

【Quality Standards】

A. Methyl salicylate content: 98.0%~100.5%

B. Solubility in alcohol (OT-43): 1ml sample soluble in 7ml 70% ethanol, may have very slight flocculent matter

C. Optical rotation: Slightly levorotatory, but not exceeding -1.5°

D. Heavy metal test (GT-16-5): Negative
