Isothiazolinone is a fungicide with the chemical formula C8H9ClN2O2S2, primarily composed of 5-chloro-2-methyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one (CIT) and 2-methyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one (MIT). Isothiazolinone acts as a biocide by breaking the bonds of proteins in bacteria and algae. Upon contact with microorganisms, it rapidly and irreversibly inhibits their growth, leading to the death of microbial cells.
