Classification of Compounds: Definition and Classification of Compounds
1. Based on composition, compounds can be classified into organic compounds and inorganic compounds.
Organic Compounds: Organic compounds contain carbon (though not all carbon-containing compounds are organic). Compounds containing only carbon and hydrogen are called hydrocarbons.
Inorganic Compounds: Inorganic compounds do not contain carbon-hydrogen bonds, such as H2O, KClO3, MnO2, KMnO4, NaOH, etc., all of which are inorganic. Inorganic compounds can be categorized into acids, bases, salts, oxides, carbides, and nitrides.
2. Based on chemical bonds, compounds can be classified into ionic compounds, covalent compounds, and coordination compounds.
Ionic Compounds: Sodium is a metallic element, and chlorine is a non-metallic element. Both sodium and chlorine readily react with other substances. When they react with each other, they form the compound sodium chloride.
Covalent Compounds: Hydrochloric acid is an aqueous solution of hydrogen chloride gas. Hydrogen and chlorine can combine to form hydrogen chloride gas.
Coordination Compounds: Complex molecules or ions formed by a central atom (or ion) and several ligand molecules (or ions) through coordinate bonds are generally referred to as coordination units. Any compound containing a coordination unit is called a coordination compound, often abbreviated as complex. Coordination compounds are a type of covalent compound.
