The PPSL-18 Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) Irradiation Drug and Food Rapid Detector is developed based on the guiding principles of the OSL identification method for irradiated traditional Chinese medicines. It is used for rapid detection of traditional Chinese medicines or identification of whether food ingredients have been irradiated. This method is applicable for identifying whether Chinese herbal decoction pieces and solid preparations containing crude drug powder have been subjected to ionizing radiation (irradiation) at doses of 1 kGy or above.
Traditional Chinese medicinal materials often contain or carry minerals (inorganic substances, silicates, etc.). When exposed to ionizing radiation (irradiation), these minerals store energy through structural voids. When stimulated by excitation light, this stored energy is released in the form of photons. The OSL identification method determines whether Chinese herbal decoction pieces and solid preparations containing crude drug powder have undergone ionizing radiation (irradiation) based on the number of photons released.
The PPSL-18 OSL Irradiation Drug and Food Rapid Detector belongs to the photostimulated luminescence (PSL) system, also known as the OSL system. It consists of a pulsed excitation light source (infrared excitation light source), sample chamber, detection probe, photon counting system, and control unit. It is used for rapid identification of whether food and drugs have undergone irradiation treatment, complying with the EU EN13751 standard. It is widely applied for rapid screening of Chinese herbal decoction pieces, solid preparations containing crude drug powder, as well as spices, condiments, etc. It can effectively identify samples treated with ionizing radiation (irradiation) at doses of 1 kGy or above.
As an efficient and economical method for microbial sterilization, inhibition of plant sprouting, and extension of food shelf life, irradiation technology has been widely used in fields such as food and pharmaceuticals. However, much like genetically modified foods, the effects of irradiated food and drugs on the human body remain unknown. Out of long-term considerations for human health and safety, developed countries such as those in Europe and America have long strengthened regulations on irradiated food and drugs. Domestically, with increasing public awareness of food safety and government attention, food and drug regulatory authorities have also begun to intensify supervision of irradiated food and drugs to prevent irreversible future consequences due to misuse of irradiation technology.
The PPSL-18 OSL Irradiation Drug and Food Rapid Detector uses a 50mm diameter Petri sample dish, requiring very little sample quantity. The testing time for a single sample is only 60 seconds.
The PPSL-18 OSL Irradiation Drug and Food Rapid Detector features a compact design and small size, requiring only a data cable to connect to a computer for operation. Except for sample loading and unloading, the entire detection process is completed through software operation.
