Plastic mold factories use synthetic resin as the raw material, which accounts for 40% to 90% of the plastic mold composition. Due to its high proportion, the properties of the resin often determine the properties of the mold. Many people mistakenly equate resin with polyvinyl chloride plastic or phenolic resin, but in fact, resin and plastic are two entirely different concepts. Resin is an unprocessed raw polymer that can not only serve as the raw material for manufacturing plastic molds but also be used to produce synthetic fibers, adhesives, and coatings. However, most plastics, aside from containing resin, require additional substances. In plastic mold factories, manufacturers often use fillers—also known as reinforcing agents—which not only enhance the strength and heat resistance of the plastic but also reduce production costs.
Plasticizers increase the plasticity and flexibility of plastics, reduce brittleness, and make the plastic easier to process and mold. Plasticizers are typically high-boiling-point organic compounds that are miscible with resin, odorless, and stable to light and heat. Phthalate esters are commonly used. For example, when producing polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plastic, adding a larger amount of plasticizer results in soft PVC, while adding little or no plasticizer (less than 10%) yields rigid PVC.
