Babbitt metal is a low-melting-point bearing alloy with hard particles distributed in a soft matrix. It consists of three series: tin-based, lead-based, and cadmium-based. The representative composition (mass fraction) of tin-based Babbitt alloy is: antimony 3%~15%, copper 2%~6%, cadmium <1%, and the remainder is tin. Known for its anti-friction properties, tin-based and lead-based bearing alloys were invented by the American Babbitt, hence the name. Due to its white color, it is also called white metal or bearing gold.

The solidus temperature of cast tin-based Babbitt alloy ZSnSb11Cu6 is 240°C, and the liquidus temperature is 370°C. Its maximum operating temperature should not exceed 100°C. The coefficient of friction is 0.005 with oil and 0.28 without oil.

Babbitt alloy is primarily used for bushings, bearings, liners, and sleeves of large machinery spindles. Examples include cement machinery, steel machinery, chemical machinery, papermaking machinery, petroleum machinery, ship machinery, compression machinery, coal mining machinery, mineral processing equipment, etc. It can also be used in large machine tools to replace brass, with excellent results.

In addition to manufacturing sliding bearings, due to its soft texture and low strength, Babbitt alloy is often sprayed as wire or powder onto substrates such as steel to make bushings. To prevent component segregation and refine the grain structure, a small amount of arsenic is often added.

According to national standards, Babbitt alloy can be divided into two types: tin-based alloy and lead-based alloy. Lead-based alloys have lower strength and hardness compared to tin-based alloys and also exhibit poorer corrosion resistance. Therefore, customers often choose tin-based alloys when using Babbitt alloy. Common grades include ZChSnSb11-6, ZChSnSb8-4, ZChSnSb8-8, etc. Although lead-based alloys do not perform as well as tin-based alloys, many customers still choose to use them because they are more economical.
