Working Principle of Nitrogen Generators in the Oil and Gas Industry

Under adsorption equilibrium conditions, any adsorbent will adsorb more gas when the gas pressure is higher and the temperature is lower. Conversely, lower pressure and higher temperature result in less adsorption. If the temperature remains constant, adsorption occurs under increased pressure, while desorption takes place under reduced pressure (vacuum) or at atmospheric pressure. This process is known as pressure swing adsorption. Thus, pressure swing adsorption achieves adsorption and desorption by altering pressure.

Carbon molecular sieve exhibits significant differences in the adsorption capacity of oxygen and nitrogen. It is a material with numerous internal micropores. Utilizing the principle of pressure swing adsorption, the difference in adsorption capacity of oxygen and nitrogen in the micropores of the carbon molecular sieve under certain pressures enables the separation of oxygen and nitrogen. When pressure increases,

the carbon molecular sieve adsorbs oxygen to produce nitrogen. When pressure decreases to atmospheric levels, the carbon molecular sieve desorbs oxygen for regeneration. Pressure swing adsorption nitrogen generation equipment typically employs a dual-tower process, where one tower adsorbs oxygen to produce nitrogen while the other tower desorbs nitrogen for regeneration. This alternating cycle continuously produces high-purity nitrogen.
