Chromite is a mineral formed by magmatic processes, often found in ultramafic rocks and associated with olivine; when the rock undergoes weathering and destruction, chromite often transitions into placer deposits. It appears very similar to magnetite, generally occurring in massive or granular aggregates. Chromite belongs to the isometric crystal system, with crystals forming small octahedra, typically appearing as granular and dense massive aggregates. It is black in color, with a brown streak, submetallic luster, hardness of 5.5, specific gravity of 4.2–4.8, and weak magnetism, with higher iron content resulting in stronger magnetism.

Chromite is refractory and used as a refractory material, as well as for producing chromium(III) oxide and other chromium compounds. Chromite has a wide range of industrial applications. Firstly, it is the primary raw material for smelting ferrochromium alloys, which are widely used in the steel industry to produce various alloy steels, enhancing the strength and wear resistance of steel. Additionally, chromite is used to produce refractory materials, such as refractory bricks and refractory coatings, which exhibit excellent fire resistance in high-temperature environments.
