II. Introduction to the Reverse Osmosis Desalination System
Reverse osmosis is a membrane separation process driven by a pressure gradient, functioning like a molecular filter to effectively remove dissolved salts, colloids, bacteria, and organic matter from water. The reverse osmosis process is the inverse of natural osmosis. During operation, a pump is used to apply pressure to the saline solution to overcome its natural osmotic pressure, allowing water to pass through the reverse osmosis membrane while impurities such as dissolved salts are retained on the other side. To prevent the accumulation of dissolved salts and impurities from the feed water on the membrane surface, the concentrated brine continuously flushes the membrane during operation, carrying away impurities from the brine and the membrane surface, thereby completing the entire process of reverse osmosis desalination and purification.
